In 1997 the Catholic Diocese of Maine decided to close the parish of St. Dominic's church, built in 1888. The City purchased the building and solicited proposals for re-use.
The winning proposal was submitted by the Maine Irish Heritage Society, which purchased the building for $1 and now operates it as a community and event center.
